Chinese car sales notch 12m

CHINA'S auto sales exceeded 12 million units in the first 11 months this year, according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers today.
The robust sales represented a 39 percent increase from the same period last year, when sales stood at 8.63 million.
China's auto sales received a boost in February this year after the government halved purchase tax on small engine vehicles and offered subsidies to help farmers buy autos.
The government has yet to announce whether to continue the incentives, prompting buyers to order cars by the year's end.
CAAM forecast that vehicle sales and output would both exceed 13 million for the whole of 2009, meaning China will overtake the United States as the biggest auto market in the world.
According to Xinhua news agency, citing preliminary statistics of CAAM, sales reached more than 1.35 million units in November nationwide.
The country's largest auto maker, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, sold about 2.44 million cars in the first 11 months, up 54 percent year on year, while Sino-US joint venture company Shanghai GM sold 627,495 units, up 50.5 percent.
