Coda EV aims US sales of 14,000 units
CODA Automotive Corp, a California-based company focusing on advanced electric drive system, aims to sell 14,000 Chinese-made electric cars in the United States in the first year after the launch of the Coda EV model.
Chief executive officer Phil Murtaugh said the firm is targeting sales of the Coda EV in the US in the fourth quarter of this year, which will be the first made-in-China pure electric vehicle to sell in a mature market.
The Coda EV is based on the Saibo mid-class sedan made by China's Changan Auto Group.
Murtaugh told reporters yesterday that the Coda EV has improved safety standard and is powered by an advanced electric drive system made by the US firm's joint venture with Lishen, a Tianjin-based lithium-iron battery maker.
Using a 220-volt socket, the Coda EV has a range of 200 kilometers on a full charge of six hours. An additional two hour-charge provides electricity for another 65 kilometers.
The Coda EV, priced at US$44,900 before a government subsidy, will compete with Nissan's Leaf which began selling in the US last December for US$32,700. But Murtaugh is confident that the Coda EV is still attractive as its advanced thermal management system for batteries provides dependable power to be able to travel the distance mentioned.
Murtaugh, who previously held top positions in General Motors China, disclosed Coda is also eying at selling the EV in China via a possible joint venture with a local partner.
