Discount Offer To Chinese Customers
TOYOTA Motor Corp, which is struggling with global recall woes, yesterday started offering no-interest car loans in China to win back consumers in the world's largest auto market.
The Japanese car maker's venture with FAW Group Co announced bigger discounts, zero-interest loans, free vehicle insurance and free fuel yesterday.
The promotion, which will run until the end of this month, covers its mainstream models, including Crown, Corolla and Reiz.
"The incentives are a little bit larger than previous ones," said one FAW Toyota Motor Sales Co dealer in Shanghai.
Toyota's other joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group Co is also extending current promotions for Camry sedans and Yaris subcompacts.
The sales campaign followed Toyota's President Akio Toyoda's visit to China on Monday to apologize for its global recall of more than 8 million units due to problems in floor mats, braking systems and sticky gas pedals.
In China, the company recalled 75,552 RAV4 SUVs from February to fix similar problems.
Toyoda said Toyota is not considering lowering its sales target of 800,000 units in China this year.
Although the recall in China is much smaller than in North America, safety concerns have already driven some potential Toyota customers to rivals such as General Motors and Volkswagen.
Qian Lan, a 26-year-old office worker who is planning to buy her first car, said she is not interested in Toyota's new campaign.
"Car prices of Toyota's models are higher than any other Japanese cars," Qian said. "I won't be buying a Toyota, especially now, because of concerns about product safety."
Some consumers also complained that Toyota conducted different service standards in China as it failed to provide the door-to-door service and loan cars offered in the United States.
In January, Toyota's sales in China gained 53 percent year on year to 72,000 units while General Motors Corp reported record high sales of 219,192 units, up 97 percent from a year earlier.
