Dongfeng Nissan fined

DONGFENG Nissan and its dealerships in Guangzhou were yesterday hit with the third-biggest fine for a single car brand over monopoly.

The punishment — 123.3 million yuan (US$19 million) for the carmaker, and 19.12 million yuan for the dealerships — was the harshest since Mercedes-Benz and Audi were slapped with fines since China launched an industry-wide anti-trust campaign last year.

Dongfeng Nissan was found to have excluded and obstructed free market competition by setting fixed prices for dealerships to sell cars between 2012 and 2014, a practice of vertical monopoly that is commonly seen in the franchise-based auto retail industry.

The number of affected dealerships this time is the highest among all reported cases.
