Ex-GM top exec joins Ford China
A FORMER General Motors Co sales and marketing executive has joined Ford Motor Co’s China unit — a move ex-colleagues have described as a big gain for Ford.
GM has said in the past that 57-year-old Joseph Liu was instrumental in making its Buick and other brands leading players in China. He is generally regarded as one of the most experienced and insightful executives in the world’s largest car market.
Ford said in an internal announcement that Liu, who retired last year as executive vice president of GM’s main joint venture in China, has joined its China operations as vice president of marketing and sales.
The appointment was effective on August 1 and came as Ford’s China sales weakened on a market slump, a slower economy and stock market gyrations.
Its vehicle sales in July fell 6 percent year on year to 77,100 and are down 0.7 percent for the year to date.
Before joining Shanghai GM, Liu worked for GM’s Asia-Pacific unit with a focus on China.
