FAW-Volkswagen posts 2nd large recall

FAW-VOLKSWAGEN yesterday launched a recall of more than 270,000 Audi cars due to a faulty airbag, making its second large-scale recall this month following nationwide consumer protests of the Sagitar sedan’s broken rear axle risk.
The affected cars include 265,943 locally produced Audi A4L and 4,692 imported Audi A4 Allroad cars made between May 25, 2012, and October 22, 2014, totaling 270,635 units. A problem with the settings of the airbag control unit could prevent the front airbag from deploying when the car is hit from one side. The recall is to update the software.
Less than two weeks ago, FAW-Volkswagen announced a recall of over 563,000 Sagitar sedans in China due to risks of broken rear axles. But the company found its repair plan failed to put consumers at ease. It had planned to add metal inlays and a 10-year guarantee for the rear torsion axle installed in the affected Sagitars as well as in over 17,400 imported Beetles. But consumers demanded the company replace the rear suspension or refund them.
“We understand the concerns of our customers, and we are well aware of the reasons for the protests,” Jochem Heizmann, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group China, said on Tuesday.
He clarified that if the car doesn’t suffer any side or rear impact accidents, there is no cause for concern.
FAW-Volkswagen released a statement in July to say there were no design or manufacturing flaws in the rear axle.
The recall of the Sagitar and Beetle cars is due to start on February 2, next year.
