Firms feel bullish on trucking market
DOMESTIC and foreign makers of trucks and commercial vehicles are bullish about the Chinese market where they plan to offer more diversified products despite last year's sluggish performance.
Daimler Trucks and Buses (China) hopes to raise the number of dealerships to above 50 by the end of this year from 41 now to reduce direct sales channels and step up collaboration with local dealers, Robert Veit, its president and chief executive, said at a press briefing during the Auto Shanghai 2013 yesterday. Set up early this month the company demonstrates the group's commitment to one of its most important markets.
Last year, Daimler's truck sales in China grew 6.5 percent from a year ago to 19,000, against a 32 percent drop in the overall heavy duty truck market in China.
The sales of medium and heavy duty trucks in China may see a compound annual growth of 3.2 percent through 2016 compared with an average of 13 percent growth from 2007 to 2011, consulting firm AlixPartners said in a report.
China became the third largest global market for Mercedes-Benz imported trucks.
The company plans to develop the bus business in China, Veit added.
Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle aims to leverage its tie-up with Volvo on new technology and products.
