First electric car with a free plate hits the road
SHANGHAI'S first electric car with a free license plate was delivered today, setting a milestone in the city's endeavor to popularize green cars with incentives -- a policy introduced last December.
At a delivery ceremony held at Shanghai Gaozhan New Energy Vehicle Sales Services Co this morning, a Shanghai resident, Qian Jun, received the key to a white Roewe E50, which carries the city's first free car plate with initials DZ.
Sitting behind the wheel, Qian looked excited. He said he booked the car even before the city announced the incentive policy because he embraces the green mobility concept of his electric car.
"I was delighted to hear that that I would get a free car plate in addition to a 40,000 yuan municipal subsidy in December. So I went through the purchase procedure without hesitation," Qian said. "But I didn't expect I would have the honor to be the first to get them."
With another 54,000 yuan subsidy from the central government and the 75,000 yuan he saved from paying for a normal car plate at this month's auction, Qian saved more than 170,000 yuan for a car priced at 234,900 yuan. He ended up paying only about 130,000 yuan.
Xu Weihan, founder and CFO of Shanghai Gaozhan New Energy Vehicle Sales Services Co, said it took the company about a week to get Qian the car plate, which took more time because the administration was standardizing the procedures for handling such applications.
"From now on, it will be faster to get the procedure done -- probably in just one day," said Xu.
As the only green car dealership in Shanghai, the company plans to deliver all the 230 electric cars ordered last year with free car plates by March.
