GKN aims to double production

GKN Driveline, a UK-based car component maker, is to invest 80 million yuan (US$12 million) to expand its Shanghai-based research center and double production capacity in China, the company said yesterday.

GKN is a major global drive shaft maker with almost all car makers as clients. It also provides products for Asian firms such as Shanghai-based SAIC Group and India's Tata.

"We will continue double digit growth in China and India because the center of the automotive world is in Asia, especially in China, Japan and India," said Marc Vuarchex, managing director of GKN Asia Pacific.

In 2014, GKN's production capacity in China will double to 800,000 units from 2010 and the number of Chinese employees will increase by 50 percent to 6,000.

The company plans to invest 80 million yuan to expand its research center in Shanghai within five years, and will double the number of research engineers to 120.
