GM sales hit record
GENERAL Motors and Chinese joint ventures yesterday reported July's sales rose 22.2 percent from a year earlier to a record high of 176,645 units.
Sales growth by the Shanghai GM joint venture remained especially strong, rising 42.1 percent year on year to 80,269 units, which is also a record for the month of July. Bullish sales came from higher demand for Chevrolet models, which jumped 70.1 percent to 35,385 units with popularity of the Cruze, New Sail passenger cars and Captiva SUV.
GM's minivan venture SAIC-GM-Wuling boosted sales to 90,658 units in July while FAW-GM, GM's light commercial vehicle joint venture, sold 5,560 units during the same period. In the first seven months, GM and its joint ventures sold more than 1.38 million vehicles in China, representing an increase of 44.5 percent from the same period in 2009.
