Geely to drive up sales

GEELY Automobile Holdings Ltd aims to raise sales to 2 million units by 2015 as it sets to expand after it bought Volvo Car Corp for US$1.8 billion from Ford.

To help it achieve its target, the Zhejiang-based private car maker plans to roll out more than 20 new models over the next two years, according to Zhao Fuquan, Geely's head of product development. This would be the most intensive launch for Geely, which introduced just three models last year. Geely last week launched its Englon brand in addition to the existing Gleagle and Emgrand.

Geely expects half of its sales by 2015 to come from overseas markets.

The private auto maker targets an overseas sales of 22,000 to 23,000 units this year. Its overseas sales totaled more than 18,000 units in 2009.

It now sells autos in Russia, Indonesia, Egypt and other developing countries.

During the media preview of Auto China 2010 in Beijing yesterday, Geely showed off its complete lineup of 39 vehicles and 14 powertrain products which are the core component that powers cars. In keeping with the green awareness, it has also brought along five new energy vehicles which will hit the market within two years. The auto show ends on May 2.

Last year, Geely boosted sales by 59 percent to 325,000 units from 2008 level. The growth outpaced the overall industrial increase of 46 percent. It intends to sell 400,000 units this year.

Geely is scouting for sites in China to produce Volvo cars.
