Germany Optimistic On Deal

THE German government does not expect the European Commission to thwart a plan by General Motors to sell a controlling stake in European car maker Opel to Canada's Magna, a spokesman said yesterday.

"The government is optimistic that any issues can be resolved," said government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm.

Germany has pledged 4.5 billion euros (US$6.58 billion) in financing guarantees under the deal along with other nations.
