Guangqi Honda achieves 3-year dream
A dream to develop a self-branded car for China has finally come true for Guangqi Honda Automobile Co when it unveiled its Everus S1 model at the 2010 Auto Guangzhou, the company's home turf.
It was a dream three years in the making after the car maker set up its research unit to help drive the firm to be the first Sino-foreign joint venture to mass produce a self-branded model.
"It's every Chinese auto maker's dream to create self-branded cars," said Yao Yiming, executive vice president of Guangqi Honda, a venture between Guangzhou Automobile Group and Japan's Honda Motor Co.
Self-branded cars will help domestic auto makers beef up their technological expertise and create public awareness of their own brands, said Cui Dongshu, an analyst at China Passenger Car Association.
Yao said Everus cars will be manufactured and marketed in the same distribution channels with the venture's existing brands. Buyers will also be covered by existing after-sales services.
Guangqi Honda plans to start selling the Everus in the first half of 2011 and is eying sales of 30,000 to 50,000 units next year, President Kanayama Hironori said.
Other domestic companies are also developing own designs with foreign partners to grab market share and boost sales in China.
Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Co yesterday also presented its own branded concept car, the Venucia. The Sino-Japanese joint venture launched the brand in early September to test the market in China, with the first mass-production model to be introduced to the Chinese market in 2012.
Fumiaki Matsumoto, managing director of Dongfeng Nissan, said in September the firm aims to sell more than 1 million vehicles annually.
