Honda To Hike Capacity

HONDA Motor Co yesterday said it will raise the production capacity by two-thirds at a new joint venture plant it is building in China and it also plans to produce hybrid cars domestically to tap future growth.

The plant in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, will have an annual capacity of 100,000 units, an increase from 60,000 units under the original plan.

Honda will invest 2 billion yuan (US$300 million) in the plant owned by Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co, the Japanese car maker's joint venture in China with Dongfeng Motor Group Co.

There are plans to further expand the capacity to 120,000 units in 2013 and up to 240,000 units eventually, according to a statement.

At the ground-breaking event for the plant yesterday, Seiji Kuraishi, head of Honda's China operations, expressed an interest in "producing hybrid vehicles in China in the future" and selling them at an affordable price.
