Honda raises production in China

HONDA Motor Corp plans to increase production in China by one-third to 830,000 units by the second half of 2012 to meet rising vehicle demand in the world's largest auto market.

Guangqi Honda Automobile Co, Honda's venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co Ltd, will increase the annual output of its Zengcheng plant to 240,000 units by the second half of 2011, the flagship venture announced today.

The expansion, which would include upgrading existing assembly lines and adding new equipment, will bring the total production capacity of the venture to 480,000 units per year.

Guangzhou-based Guangqi Honda, the producer of Accord, City, Fit and Odyssey models, said two new models including the Crosstour and its own brand vehicle Everus will be locally produced later.

Honda's production expansion came as international car makers are eager to grab a bigger slice of China rapidly growing auto market, boosted by low vehicle ownership and rising income.

Auto sales in China may top 15 million units this year after beating the United States as the world's largest auto market last year.

Honda's other venture with Dongfeng Motor Corp earlier also announced plans to build a second plant which will have an initial output of 60,000 units when it opens in the second half of 2012.
