Infiniti eyes China production in 2014
NISSAN'S luxury car unit Infiniti, trailing its German peers, will become the first Japanese luxury brand to start production in China in 2014 as it drives toward carving a bigger slice of China's growing premium auto market.
The Infiniti models will be produced by Nissan's flagship venture with Dongfeng Motor Co, the Japanese carmaker said in a statement yesterday. Nissan said two Infiniti models will be produced domestically, without elaborating.
Expanding the Infiniti business is one of the key steps in Nissan's mid-term strategy to increase the global sales of Infiniti to 500,000 units by 2016.
"In order to achieve the target, the localization of Infiniti in the world's largest auto market is important for our business development," said Andy Palmer, executive vice president of Nissan Motor Co.
China has been the second-largest market for Infiniti for two years after Nissan started importing the models to the country in 2007. Last year, sales of Infiniti cars rose 60 percent on an annual basis to 19,075 units in China.
Lu Zhengyu, general manager of Infiniti China, earlier said the carmaker targets a 50 percent sales increase this year.
