Japanese brands lead car sales dip in September

MONTHLY deliveries of passenger vehicles in China dropped for the first time since January, with Japanese car sales in free fall last month following a territory row between the two countries.
Deliveries of sedans, sports utility and multi-purpose vehicles and mini vans, dropped 2.6 percent to 1.25 million units, which reflects a dramatic slow-down from last month's 11.2 percent increase, the China Passenger Car Association said today.
Taking the brunt of the decline, Japanese retail car sales plunged 42 percent last month with wholesale transactions dropping 41 percent as Chinese consumers shunned Japanese cars in response to a sovereignty dispute over the Diaoyu Islands, which is still ongoing.
If the stress between the two countries is not eased, German car brands will eventually overtake Japanese ones in terms of market share in China this year, the association said.
The market share of Japanese carmakers in China's passenger car segment has been dropping from its peak of 30.8 percent in 2008, the association noted.
