Jiading favors clean and green
SHANGHAI International Automobile City, China's pilot area for electric vehicle development, plans to quadruple electric vehicle models for test driving in 2012 and may launch a rental business for electric autos next year.
The project in the city's Jiading District will offer 20 brands of electric cars for customers to test drive by the end of 2012, compared with five models now, according to officials of the area's developer.
Meanwhile, about three to four auto leasing companies have already signed agreements with the Jiading government and customers may start to rent electric vehicles as early as the beginning of 2012, the officials said.
Four Chinese automakers - Lifan, Chery, Zotye and BYD - provide the first batch of cars in the trial project. Yesterday, Volvo became the first overseas carmaker to offer its C30 electric sedan for test-driving in the auto city. Officials of the auto city said about 10 foreign brands will enter Jiading by the end of next year.
"We got a positive response from the first batch of drivers, and the costs of running an electric auto are almost one-tenth of those for gasoline-powered ones," said Rong Wenwei, general manger of Shanghai International Automobile City Development Co. "On average, the cost of charging is about 1,200 yuan (U$189) to 1,500 yuan per year for an electric auto."
In April, Shanghai started a program in the district to allow people to privately own electric cars. The district was picked by the central government in April as the demonstration zone for electric vehicles. Shanghai was also named as the country's pilot city for electric vehicle development.
