Johnson Controls powers start-stop autos in China
JOHNSON Controls has begun production of automotive batteries for start-stop vehicles in China as the country’s automakers are urged by the government to produce more eco-friendly cars.
The Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based company has delivered its first batch of locally manufactured batteries for start-stop vehicles to domestic automotive customers from its plant in Changxing, Zhejiang Province, it said at the 16th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition yesterday.
“Start-stop is the best technology to help automakers meet increasingly strict environmental regulations while saving consumers money, as it requires minimal changes to the vehicle and costs significantly less than hybrid or electric vehicles,” said Lisa Bahash, group vice president and general manager of original equipment at Johnson Controls Power Solutions.
China, which is already the world’s largest automobile market, has requested all passenger vehicle manufacturers to achieve average fuel economy of 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers across their product line-up by the end of this year, and the target will be even more stringent to reach 5 liters per 100 kilometers by 2020.
Start-stop is the best way all the way through 2020 and its popularity is a global trend, Bahash added.
“We strive to make more efficient, valuable and affordable products to customers as we are fully committed to be the world’s largest auto battery supplier into tomorrow,” she noted.
As the world’s largest automotive battery maker, Johnson Controls said its absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries can enable start-stop vehicles to achieve at least 5 percent of improvement on fuel economy compared with conventional cars.
Johnson Controls said last year that it has signed an agreement to supply AGM batteries to Shanghai-based SAIC Motor Corp, China’s leading automaker, to power its start-stop vehicles.
“As the world’s leading provider of batteries for start-stop vehicles, we expect the Chinese start-stop car market to continue grow rapidly. We will continue to invest in bringing advanced technologies and capacity to the country with our ‘thinking ahead’ philosophy to meet increasing demand from customers,” said Kenneth Yeng, vice president and general manager of Johnson Controls Power Solutions China.
The company expects 40 percent of all new vehicles will be start-stop vehicles in China by 2020. And the number of start-stop vehicles produced in China last year was 20 times larger than the combined number of all types of new energy vehicles. A start-stop vehicle can shut off the engine automatically when the car is idle, and it can be restarted when the driver’s foot leaves the brake pedal.
