Land Rover recalls 36,451 imported SUVs

JAGUAR Land Rover has decided to recall 36,451 imported Range Rover Evoque SUVs in China after the model’s innovative nine-speed gearbox was revealed to have “life-endangering” problems by China Central Television on Consumers’ Day last week.
The affected vehicles are the 2014 model made between July 15, 2013 and June 3, 2014 as well as the 2015 model produced between June 3, 2014 and December 24, 2014.
The company will upgrade the “unmatching” software that controls the automatic transmission whose performance may weaken and cause noises under some circumstances, it said in a statement on Thursday.
According to the CCTV program, imported Evoques equipped with the nine-speed transmission experienced a sudden loss of speed and paralysis of the reverse gear, a problem that previous software upgrade by Land Rover dealerships failed to fix. Even replacing the problematic transmission with a brand-new gearbox didn’t help.
Land Rover will also extend the warranty for the nine-speed transmission to seven years, or 240,000 kilometers, and offer two free basic maintenance services within one year after the software upgrade.
The nine-speed transmission that offers smoother gear change and better fuel economy is the second gearbox innovation to be recalled after that by Volkswagen.
Range Rover Evoque is Land Rover’s best-selling model in China.
US sport-utility vehicle Jeep, which sources its nine-speed transmission from ZF, the same supplier for Land Rover, also met similar consumer complaints as the Evoque users. Jeep also provided software upgrade for the affected SUV owners.
Foreign automakers are already under pressure in China, the world’s largest car market, following an investigation into alleged monopoly pricing for parts and vehicles.
