Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a leader in innovation
MERCEDES-BENZ (China) Ltd held an exhibition at the China Academy of Fine Art (CAFA) in Beijing to illustrate heritage and leadership of its flagship S-Class series.
Under the theme of "Timeless Masterpieces: the S-Class Hall of Fame," the art museum at CAFA was transformed to an "S-Class Museum" with a comprehensive exhibit of the models and pictures of all nine generations of the flagship model.
"The grand ceremony was befittingly held at CAFA in Beijing, a classic hall that displays some of the most state-of-the-art artifacts, thus creating a truly majestic and historical atmosphere that truly represents the rich S-Class heritage," said Klaus Maier, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd.
Next year, Mercedes-Benz is to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the S-Class and the 125th anniversary of the invention of automobiles, when its founder, Carl Benz, obtained the world's first auto patent.
"With a history of 60 years and nine generations, the S-Class plays an integral role in the development of Mercedes-Benz's 125-year heritage," said Maier. "The S-Class has always stood at the pinnacle of the world's top luxury car segment with pioneering technical breakthroughs, bringing state-of-the-art craftsmanship, elegant design and innovative technologies that set the pace among competitors worldwide."
The S-Class, the synonym for luxury on wheels, has been setting standards with limitless technology and driving comfort.
A bunch of new technological innovations were first installed in the model before other Mercedes-Benz vehicles and industry-wide auto makers following suit. To name just a few: the airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and Occupant Protection System PRE-SAFE?.
"With 125 years of automobile tradition and 60 years of S-Class history, this vehicle has solidified itself as a technological trendsetter in the luxury segment," said Helmut Groesser, senior manager of Product Management for Mercedes-Benz Cars. "Looking forward, the S-Class will undoubtedly continue in this prestigious role as a steady leader in innovation."
In its latest ground-breaking technological prowess, its ninth generation S-Class set new benchmarks for comfort, driving safety, performance and luxury at its finest.
The new model features the world's first SPLITVIEW technology for the COMAND system. In terms of safety, modern assistance systems turn the new S-Class into an "intelligent" partner that can quickly prevent accidents or mitigate their effects, through DISTRONIC Plus, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Night View Assist, and ATTENTION ASSIST.
Moreover, Mercedes-Benz further reinforced its pioneering spirit in eco-friendly technology with the S-Class through S 400 HYBRID - the world's first series-production vehicle to feature a hybrid drive with a lithium-ion battery.
Crowned as the "CO2 champion of the luxury class" and "the world's most efficient luxury saloon," this popular model contributes 20 percent of total S-Class sales in this market.
"At Mercedes-Benz, our goal is to be 'the best or nothing,'" explained Juergen Wittmann, senior manager, Archive & Collection, Mercedes-Benz Cars Brand Communication.
The S-Class targets at elites with an average age of 40 years in China, 15 years younger than the average European consumers.
"China is strategically important in S-Class world's market. Thus we offer a wider range of choices in China to underscore our commitment to China," said Bjoern Hauber, executive vice president, Sales & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd.
At present, around 40 percent of S-Class sales were generated from Asia and China has become the single largest market for the luxury sedan since 2008.
As a manifestation of its achievement in China, Mercedes-Benz sold more than 11,600 S-Class sedans in the first seven months of this year, further consolidating China's position as the largest market worldwide for the flagship brand.
In July alone, the model experienced a remarkable growth of 218 percent to deliver 2,440 units.
"This relentless growth of the S-Class has not only strengthened Mercedes-Benz's brand image, but it has also played a major role in contributing to our overall success, positioning us as the fastest-growing luxury brand in China," continued Hauber.
Overall, Mercedes-Benz sold 14,500 units in July in China including AMG, smart and Maybach brands, up 201 percent from a year ago. It marked a record high for the fourth consecutive month.
For the first seven months, total sales climbed 134 percent to 74,070 sedans, exceeding the annual sales last year.
