Mercedes-Benz recalls smart brand cars twice in month
MERCEDES-BENZ said yesterday it will recall more than 50,000 smart hybrid cars on the Chinese mainland starting from August 22 in a second recall concerning the smart brand this month.
The recall affects a total of 50,144 smart 52kW micro hybrid drive (MHD) cars from the model year of 2009 to 2014, made between August 27, 2008 and March 21, 2014, China’s top quality watchdog, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, disclosed in a statement.
The vibration of the vehicle’s engine in some cases will be transferred to the belt drive transmission system, which could lead to a malfunctioning of the electric motor and water pump, turn on the warning light on the control panel, shut down the engine, and even cause damage in serious situations.
Mercedes-Benz will check all the affected vehicles, replace the faulty components and upgrade the transmission system.
Also from August 22, the German carmaker will recall 57,843 petrol-powered smart Fortwo vehicles due to a problem with the warm water shut-off valve.
