Sales falter but Toyota upbeat on 2013 target
Despite failing to reach positive sales territory in China this year in the aftermath of the Diaoyu Islands dispute, Japanese carmaker Toyota is confident of meeting its 2013 growth target, pinning its hopes on new car releases in the remaining five months.
The world’s largest carmaker by sales said yesterday it delivered 75,600 units in China last month, down 3.5 percent from a year earlier. That put an end to a two-month streak of sales increase, which had marked the company’s recovery from the boycott of Japanese goods sparked by the Sino-Japanese political turmoil over the Diaoyu Islands last year.
Xu Yiming, spokesman of Toyota China, attributed the July sales slip to “natural market fluctuation.” By last month, the company’s sales were down 5.4 percent this year on an annual basis, but Xu insisted that Toyota is still sticking to its forecast of selling 900,000 units this year, which represents a 7 percent annual growth.
The sales momentum is expected to pick up with the launch of new products in the upcoming months, Xu revealed, including the re-styled small car Yaris and the revamped sports utility vehicle RAV-4, as summer, traditionally China’s low season for car shopping, gives way to autumn.
