Second Honda factory strikes for higher pay

WORKERS at a parts plant funded by Honda's affiliate Yutaka Giken Co in south China have gone on strike for a pay rise, adding to a slew of labor disputes in the world's manufacturing hub.

Workers at Foshan Fengfu Autoparts Co in Guangdong Province walked off their jobs yesterday.

Founded in 2000, the company, with 416 workers, is a venture between Yutaka Giken and Taiwanese Moonstone Holdings Limited. It mainly supplies exhaust parts for Honda's Accord, Fit and Odyssey vehicles, produced at Honda's joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co.

This is the second Honda-related strike in China within a month.

Japan's second largest auto company has offered a 24-percent monthly pay rise, or 366 yuan, to end a standoff with workers at its wholly-owned transmission plant in China, which causing its four manufacturing plants to shut down production for one week.

But production at factories owned by Guangqi Honda was not affected by the new strike yet, according to Guangqi Honda's spokeswoman.

About 20 workers at Foshan Fengfu rallied their colleagues to go on strike early yesterday, according to an earlier report by South China Morning Post.

The entire workforce had downed tools by this afternoon, and management was negotiating with workers with the aim of restarting production as soon as possible, Yutaka spokesman Kazuhito Anma said, according to Bloomberg.
