Shanghai extends electric vehicle demonstration zone to Pudong

SHANGHAI yesterday extended its electric car demonstration program from Jiading District to the Pudong New Area.
The Shanghai Expo EV Pilot Zone project was launched yesterday at the former Shanghai World Expo site in Pudong by State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Co, Shanghai Expo Group, and Germany’s BMW. The partners will jointly develop 50 public charging poles for the 5-square-kilometer area.
The partnership was unveiled one day after the State Grid officially invited private investors to build charging facilities for electric cars — a long-awaited decision to let market forces drive the new-energy industry toward commercial viability.
Starting today, customers can test drive the BMW i3 electric car in the newly-established green zone.
Wang Lu, vice general manager of the State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Co, said the Expo EV zone will become the biggest charging network in Shanghai’s downtown area.
To date, there are eight charging poles in place in the zone to support BMW electric cars as well as those of other brands. But the supercharger station launched by US electric carmaker Tesla last month in Pudong is not part of Shanghai’s public charging facility solution yet.
Karsten Engel, president and CEO of BMW China, said that as China is working toward a unified standard for electric car charging, it will help resolve a huge challenge for electric car promotion in the country.
Shanghai Gaozhan New Energy Vehicle Sales Services Co, a designated new-energy car dealer, opened its second store yesterday at the Pudong site, following its first in Anting, Jiading District, as it intends to create a better awareness among consumers about electric cars.
