Tesla鈥檚 charging project launched
AMERICAN electric carmaker Tesla teamed up with Yintai, an operator of commercial complexes in China, to launch its charging project in the country yesterday.
Yintai will deploy 40 parking and charging spots for Tesla car owners in more than 30 of its real estate projects covering Beijing, Hangzhou and Chengdu. Tesla will provide wall-mounted charging poles, and Yintai will be responsible for equipment installation, maintenance and electricity fees.
The first batch of the charging poles was put in use at Beijing Yintai Center yesterday, and Tesla will extend its partnership to commercial property developer SOHO.
Veronica Wu, global vice president of Tesla responsible for the China business, said it will extend the charging project to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Chongqing by this autumn.
Tesla realized it faced a huge obstacle to penetrate further in the world’s largest auto market after a consumer protest in Beijing in April against its delivery delays exposed the dearth of charging infrastructure outside Beijing and Shanghai.
BMW, which plans to launch its i3 electric car in September, has started to deploy charging poles in Shanghai along with the State Grid and the Shanghai Expo Group. It is also working closely with property developers on charging infrastructure.
Karsten Engel, president and CEO of BMW China, said landlords have been positive over its charging plan.
