Test-drive program for green cars city-wide
Facing an uphill journey marketing electric cars, Shanghai’s sole green car dealer has decided to charge ahead by launching a city-wide test-drive program to allow the public to experience the emerging mobility solution.
Shanghai Gaozhan New Energy Vehicle Sales Services Co, based in Jiading District, yesterday said it will officially start the trial phase of the program next week, moving beyond its suburban base to reach out to consumers in downtown areas like Jing’an and Changning districts. It has already set up 11 test-drive outlets in the city and aims to increase that to 50.
Car buyers’ anxiety over mileage and safety worries are among the biggest obstacles to promoting electric vehicles in China, where the campaign of bringing 500,000 new-energy cars to the street by 2015 has largely been stalled by the lack of charging facilities and test-driving opportunities.
A survey by Shanghai International Automobile City (Group) Co last year revealed that around 64.9 percent of respondents had heard about electric vehicles, but only 9 percent had actually driven one.
A Pudong New Area resident surnamed Zhang became the first participant of the test-drive program yesterday. After trying a Roewe E50 electric car made by SAIC at the 2062 New Energy Theme Park near his home, Wang said the car’s maneuverability and acceleration are beyond his expectations.
