Tiguan launched
SHANGHAI Volkswagen yesterday launched Tiguan, its first Chinese-made sport-utility vehicle, in China. Volkswagen is looking at the new model to position itself in the country's fast growing SUV market, which is already occupied by Japanese models, including Honda's CR-V and Toyota's Rav4. Sales of SUVs jumped 47 percent to 658,800 units in China last year, outpacing the increase in the broader auto market. In the first two months of this year, SUV sales jumped 170 percent. The Tiguan, equipped with either a 1.8-liter or 2.0-liter TSI engine, will be available in seven configurations. Shanghai Volkswagen said about 40,000 orders have been received since pre-sales began in February.
