Tough road for electric vehicles
SHANGHAI faces an uphill journey marketing electric vehicles as it needs to provide more test-drive opportunities and supporting facilities for car buyers, a survey has found.
Even though the China Electric Vehicle International Demonstration Zone was established in Jiading District in April 2011, many consumers are still unaware of electric cars because they don't have a chance to take a test drive, Shanghai International Automobile City (Group) Co said in a report released last week.
The company found more than 64.9 percent of respondents have heard about electric vehicles, but only 9 percent have driven one.
Not enough charging facilities have been built to popularize their use, the report said. Up to 72.1 percent of potential electric car buyers surveyed want to charge their cars at their workplace and shopping centers during the weekday, according to the report.
