Toyota faces inferior auto parts probe

A quality bureau in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, has started an investigation into accusations against Toyota Motor Corp of selling poor quality auto parts in the country.

The action is another blow to Toyota's reputation as the Japanese car maker scrambles to restore consumer trust in its product safety and to recover its damaged brand image after it recalled about 8 million of its cars globally for various problems, including defective gas paddles and floor mats.

The Zhejiang Provincial Administration for Industry and Commerce alleged two 4S (sale, spare part, service, survey) dealerships of FAW Toyota Motor in Yiwu failed to provide quality certificates or inspection reports for more than 1,700 auto spare parts during an inspection it conducted on March 18, Xinhua news agency said yesterday.

The provincial quality administration said the spare parts were directly supplied by Toyota's wholly owned storage company, which was also found to possess other auto parts without quality certificates.

An official from Yiwu's industry and commerce administration said Toyota violated Chinese laws on product quality.

A spokesman for FAW Toyota, Toyota's joing venture in China, was not available for comment yesterday.

The Zhejiang quality administration has opened 92 cases, involving a combined 8.6 million yuan (US$1.3 million), over irregularities, including tied sale, bribery, misleading promotions and selling inferior spare parts, committed by 4S dealerships in a province-wide campaign to improve auto sales service since mid-March, Xinhua said.

Toyota promised to compensate Chinese car owners in Zhejiang Province whose cars are recalled - a first in China.
