Toyota sells 43.1% more in China

Toyota’s sales in China grew by double digits last month, driving its January and February sales 26.4 percent higher from a year earlier.

The world’s largest carmaker by sales volume last year delivered 51,900 units in China last month, up 43.1 percent year on year, according to the data released yesterday.

The February’s increase, following a 18.1 percent growth in January and a 19.4 percent jump in December, meant the company has recovered from the Diaoyu Islands dispute that fueled a consumer boycott of Japanese brands in China in the autumn of 2012.

It was not until the second half of last year when the dispute subsided that Japanese car brands started to get back on track. Toyota’s sales eventually grew 9.2 percent to 917,500 units in 2013 but they underperformed the market’s 16 percent expansion.

Toyota seeks to sell 1.1 million cars in China this year, up 19.9 percent on year, as it aims to become the first carmaker in the world to surpass 10 million units in global sales.
