Toyota to fix pedal problem soon
TOYOTA Motor Corp has said it would start fixing the problematic gas pedal in China as early as the end of this month.
Toyota said on January 28 that it would recall 75,552 RAV 4 sport utility vehicle that were made between March 19, 2009, and January 25 this year in its Chinese venture, Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co.
The recall due to a potential flaw in the vehicle's accelerator pedal is part of Toyota's massive recall of 4.6 million units in the United States and some other countries. It also suspended sales of eight popular models - the biggest scale in its history.
A Toyota dealer in Shanghai said the car maker has started shipping the spare parts to China to replace the problematic pedals and repair guidelines are also on the way to dealerships nationwide.
"We have booked appointments with car owners and the recall will officially start on February 28," said Wang Lingyun, a Toyota dealer. The RAV 4 SUV is still on sale in China but new deliveries have been suspended. Wang said deliveries would resume after Toyota has fixed the problem.
The Japanese car maker said the problem involves a friction device in the pedal. In some extreme conditions, friction would rise to a point when the pedal may get stuck, causing acceleration.
A Toyota official said the acceleration problem is caused by design and materials it used. It has a solution which includes inserting a steel reinforcement bar that can reduce the friction and prevent the pedal from getting stuck.
