UK luxury marque aims to keep premium position

BRITISH luxury marque Jaguar Land Rover, which broke ground for a joint venture plant with China's Chery Automobile Co earlier this month, aims to keep its premium position in the market.

The company will invest heavily to develop more Land Rover models in China and maintain its premium spot in the sport-utility market, John Edwards, global brand director of the Land Rover brand, said in an interview at the Guangzhou auto show yesterday.

While China's overall auto market is slowing, luxury brands continue to grow strongly. JLR, a unit of India's Tata Motors Ltd, said its sales in China jump 70 percent year to date from a year earlier to more than 60,000 units. It is banking on China to offset weak demand in the West .

The 10.9 billion yuan (US$1.75 billion) factory in Changshu, near Shanghai, is JLR's first outside the UK. It will make co-branded vehicles apart from Jaguar sedans and Land Rover SUVs, the company has said.

"We have a long way to go in terms of developing our plans," Edwards said.
