VW to recall cars after TV show
GERMAN carmaker Volkswagen will recall cars fitted with its problematic gearboxes in China after being urged to do so by the Chinese quality watchdog.
"Volkswagen has submitted a recall application to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine today to conduct a voluntary recall," the company said yesterday in a statement, referring to the safety issue found in its DSG gearbox. It didn't specify the volume and models involved, though.
The carmaker responded to the call by the national quality watchdog on Saturday to fix the problem, which was highlighted on a China Central Television program that was broadcast last Friday.
The DSG gearbox, equipped in many popular models produced by the Volkswagen, is reported to cause abnormal noise during transmission and sudden loss of speed or acceleration, posing severe risks for drivers and passengers.
In May, the company extended the warranty for the gearbox to 10 years or 160,000 kilometers, but the move didn't restore consumer confidence. The carmaker did recall the affected cars to update the software but it was not a full-fledged recall as it didn't acknowledge it was a safety issue.
