ABB develops chargers to prolong battery life of new energy vehicles
SWISS power and automation group ABB aims to be the “catalyst” of China’s electric car market by providing more charging options for the industry, Chief Executive Ulrich Spiesshofer said.
The company earlier this year secured a six-year agreement to supply home, wall-mounted fast chargers for the Denza cars produced by BYD Daimler New Technology Co, a 50-50 joint venture between Chinese electric car maker BYD and German premium carmaker Daimler.
Spiesshofer said the technology in this partnership caters to ABB’s business portfolio and to China’s particular need for more chargers. The partnership with BYD Daimler is not an exclusive one.
“We are available to the entire industry as a partner,” the CEO told a media briefing. “I believe very strongly ABB is a catalyst for the development of electric vehicle infrastructure and electric mobility in China.”
China’s electric car market has had a relatively slow start, in part due to infrastructure bottlenecks. Many buyers are concerned about the short driving range of electric cars and the shortage of charging stations, amid energy industry disputes about who will finance, build and own them.
Still, global car manufacturers see future potential in the electric car industry because the government is so eager to fight pollution and provides some incentives for electric vehicle buyers.
Daimler’s rival Volkswagen, a late starter in making battery-powered cars in China, said last month at the Beijing auto show that it plans to build plug-in models here with its two Chinese partners.
In the Denza case, ABB’s charger delivers a full charge in seven hours and sells for 10,000 yuan (US$1,605), according to Ronald Koning, a representative for BYD Daimler. The charger also has a 20,000 yuan version that allows for a full charging in less than three hours.
The five-seat car is priced at 369,000 yuan but will be eligible for subsidies totaling up to almost 120,000 yuan, depending on region. The subsidies are deducted from the car price. In Shanghai, private buyers of Denza may also get free license plates once the model is approved under a government incentive policy. A Shanghai plate now costs more than US$11,000.
BYD Daimler started taking orders for Denza over the weekend in Beijing. ABB has also ordered two Denzas to become its first corporate customer.
