Bosch opens car repair, maintenance franchise
BOSCH, drawing on its century-long expertise as a supplier to the auto industry, runs one of the world’s largest independent chains of repair and maintenance shops under the name Bosch Car Service.
Betting on China’s increasing demand for high-quality after-sales services, the company has recently begun developing a franchise chain here.
The company is aiming to develop 50 new franchisees by the end of this year, expanding to over 1,000 in the next three years.
More important than achieving numbers is the building of a reputation for consistent and reliable services — qualities generally lacking in existing independent auto maintenance shops in China.
“The average age of cars on Chinese streets is 3.5 years,” said Yuan Xuming, general manager of Bosch Automotive Technical Services (Beijing) Co. “Many families are now buying second cars. As the after-sales market keeps growing along with consumer sophistication and knowledge about cars, we believe maintenance and repair services need to become more professional and standardized.”
A Bosch franchised service center promises to provide consumers with an one-stop solution involving parts, diagnostics and other maintenance services, regardless of carmaker or model.
Bosch is committed to comprehensive support for franchisees in workshop set-up, facility management, business planning, customer relations and a wide array of diagnostic equipment, parts, sourcing channels and training programs.
Bosch also will provide a team of more than 100 consultants to help franchisees standardize services, which it believes is the key to establishing trust with Chinese consumers. The company will leverage its industry expertise and far-flung connections with the auto-parts industry to help franchisees get the edge on services. Sourcing authentic parts at a good price is currently a major obstacle for car maintenance centers.
“When the level of procurement and market communications reaches a certain level, it will create economies of scale, benefitting our partners,” Yuan said. “Of course, when it comes to certain small-volume cars, we cannot always be 100 percent always ready to provide spare parts, but we will keep inventories at reasonable levels and offer franchisees extra services.”
