Control over vehicles
FOLLOWING the steps of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, second-tier cities in China are also resorting to vehicle population control to improve air quality and traffic conditions.
This month, the government of Shijiazhuang, capital city of Hebei Province, which suffered from heavy smog earlier this year, said it will prohibit families from purchasing a third "small passenger car" this year.
Other restrictions include traffic control in downtown area starting next year and an annual quota of 90,000 units for new small passenger cars from 2015.
The government of Zhejiang Province has just held a hearing about granting cities under its jurisdiction the rights to introduce necessary policies to ensure a smooth traffic environment, which include car purchasing quota control, restrictions on traffic and car parking, and an increase in parking fees.
