Electric vehicles purr and free drivers from mileage anxiety
SAIC General Motors, China’s best-selling car joint venture, is selling a future of mobility with electric cars that free the owners from being anxious about mileage.
As pioneers of the company’s Drive to Green strategy from 2016 to 2020, the Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid, the all-new Buick LaCrosse hybrid and the all-new Chevrolet Malibu XL hybrid are the center of attention for the company at the current Auto China 2016 show in Beijing. The three models offer a practical solution to China’s current lack of charging facilities as they also have a backup internal combustion engine.
The Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid rewrites the rule in the premium segment that high performance must come along with a big displacement. Enabling its 250-kilowatt output and 586Nm maximum torque is a segment-leading hybrid power train consisting of a 2.0T SIDI turbo-charged engine and an electric two-motor drive unit. The system draws part of its power from a battery package of 18.4 kilowatt-hours available to external charging, promising fuel consumption of only 1.7 liters per 100 kilometers.
The hybrid versions of the all-new Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Malibu XL take a further step down in electrification along with their market positioning, with no external charging so as to strike a balance between their energy-saving performance and the additional cost of engineering.
Both packing a 1.8L SIDI engine that is paired with an electric two-motor drive unit, the hybrid LaCrosse and Malibu XL can improve their fuel economy by 30 percent to 4.7L/100km and 4.3L/100km.
