Ford introduces more global vehicles at Auto Shanghai 2013, unveils new concept

AFTER years of breakneck growth, China's auto market has entered a more developed phase.

Where a rapidly expanding market once seemed to guarantee success for all participants, more sustainable growth is now driving fierce competition as Chinese consumers increasingly expect more from their vehicles in quality, safety, environmental friendliness and smart technologies.

With a wide lineup of global vehicles on display at this week's Auto Shanghai 2013 - including the global debut of an exciting new concept car - Ford Motor Co is presenting a compelling argument that its vehicles go further to meet and exceed the expectations of consumers in China.

"As a global auto company, it's crucially important for us that we have a strong presence in China, the world's largest auto market. And I think the fantastic line-up we have on our stand here in Shanghai shows that we've done that and more," said John Lawler, chairman and CEO of Ford Motor China.

"The cars we're showing illustrate our commitment to meeting our promise to bring 15 new global vehicles to China by 2015. They're the products that will drive our growth in China and around the world, and we can't wait to show them to visitors to our stand," he added.

Covering more than 2,000 square meters, Ford's display in Hall W2 at Auto Shanghai 2013 is the company's most comprehensive auto show display line-up to date, and features a range of interactive displays to help visitors better understand the quality, green, safe and smart features that set Ford vehicles apart from the competition.

As at any auto show, however, the focus of the Ford display is on the vehicles themselves. Alongside the new concept car - and in its Asian auto show debut - is the all-new Ford Mondeo, a bold expression of Ford's new global design language.

All-new Mondeo

A midsize sedan, the all-new Mondeo builds upon the success of its predecessor with a combination of striking design, luxury features, safety and fuel economy that is unmatched in its class.

Under the Mondeo's sleek exterior, Ford is showing off another all-new product: the 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine, the fifth and latest member of Ford's global family of EcoBoost engines.

By using a combination of direct fuel injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing, EcoBoost engines are designed to improve fuel economy by up to 20 percent over a larger engine of equivalent power, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by up to 15 percent.

A byproduct of China's developing auto market has been the rise of enthusiasts - drivers who place a premium on automotive performance. The Ford Fiesta ST is aimed squarely at this important market niche, featuring a high-output variant of the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine, an electronically enhanced chassis and updated styling, turning the popular Fiesta from a practical subcompact into a sizzling hot hatch.

Best-in-class

Available in China as a three-door hatchback, the Ford Fiesta ST races to 100 km/h from a standing start in 6.9 seconds and on to a top speed of more than 220 km/h.

Not all drivers in China will be looking for that kind of speed, but Lawler notes that the Fiesta ST's presence at Auto Shanghai 2013 is about more than just high performance.

"We're so excited to bring the Fiesta ST to the show - not just because it's a great little car, but because of what it represents about the Chinese market," said Lawler.

"As the auto market continues to develop here, we're able to bring more and more of our best-in-class One Ford vehicles to China. That's great news for us, and we think it's great news for Chinese drivers, too."

New concept

With an eye to the future in China, Ford will also take the wraps off a new global concept car at the show as it works to offer customers greater choice in the growing C-segment.

Ford is using the Shanghai show as an opportunity to display the Ford new concept to Chinese consumers seeking a fun driving experience and high level of technology, consumers who also value exceptional roominess, uncompromised functionality and sophisticated design.
