Meet the stars in Geneva
THE trend seen at the Geneva Motor Show 2014, which ends today, is making cars smaller and more energy-efficient. Check out some of the stars that may one day come to China, which is in great need of them to control vehicle exhaust and fight air pollution.
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer
As the first front-wheel drive car made by BMW known for its sporty and rear-wheel drive sedans, it aims to create a new combination of space functionality and dynamism. Though the car is measured at just 4,342mm long, 1,800mm wide and 1,555mm in height, a long wheelbase of 2,670mm and a raised roofline enable the room inside to be maximized, resulting in a feeling of spaciousness. And the versatile luggage compartment can be enlarged from 468 to 1,510 liters.
New SEAT Leon Cupra
With the introduction of this new hot hatchback line-up, SEAT presents its most powerful series production car ever — the New Leon Cupra 280, which has recently set a front-wheel drive lap record of 7’58’’4 at Nurburgring. Every model in the Leon Cupra family can complete the 0-62 mph sprint in less than six seconds, with power coming from Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter TSI (twincharger fuel stratified injection) turbo four-cylinder engine, available in two states of tune.
2015 Jeep Renegade
Leading Jeep’s venture into the small-sized SUV segment, the car wants to stay true to adventurous spirit the brand’s is known for. To deliver best-in-class off-road capabilities, it offers two intelligent four-wheel drive systems that can provide up to 100 percent of the engine’s available torque to the ground, through any wheel, for optimal grip. And it is the first in its segment to use a disconnecting rear axle and power take-off unit (PTU) to enhance the fuel economy of its four-wheel drive mode.
Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Autobiography Dynamic
As the most performance-focused Range Rover Evoque ever produced, the car is equipped with a 285hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, revised chassis for sharper handling, larger 13.8-inch front brake discs, and more responsive ZF 9-speed automatic transmission. The active driveline technology will enhance its agility and improve fuel efficiency.
Qoros 3 Hatch
Coming out as the company’s second production model with a coupé-like silhouette, the five-door five-seater adopts a more compact, dynamic, sporty look than its cousin, the Qoros 3 sedan, with its length decreased by 177mm to 4,438mm. But the family resemblance is still obvious in face. The rest is pretty much the same. Just like Qoros 3, each hatchback will be fitted with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment technique — Qoros MMH™ (multimedia hub) to provide services like motor vehicle monitoring, social networking and enhanced navigation with 3G connectivity.
2014 Volkswagen Scirocco
The best-selling sports car of Volkswagen is now available with a brand new range of engines that makes it more powerful but up to 19 percent more economical. That includes a 1.4-liter and 2.0-liter TSI (twincharger fuel stratified injection) engines and a 2.0 TDI (turbocharged direct injection) diesel one. The maximum output of the petrol engines varies from 125 Ps to 280 Ps, with the fuel consumption level as low as 5.4 l/100 km.
New Bentley Flying Spur V8
The car is introduced as a nice add-on to the New Flying Spur W12 model as the brand further lowers the entry level of its four-door offers to attract more customers looking to upgrade from a premium sedan. Powered by a 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 engine capable of generating 507 Ps and 660 Nm at maximum, the Flying Spur V8 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds to a top speed of 183 mhp.
Citroen C4 Cactus
The running costs of this compact hatchback have been driven down by almost 20 percent compared with the benchmark in the segment, an achievement made possible by its weight loss of up to 200kg thanks to a compact, lightweight platform, the usage of high yield-strength steel, aluminum front and rear beams, as well as a range of small latest-generation engines. Weighing just 965kg, the car emits less than 100g/km of CO2 in its petrol version.
2015 Ford Focus
As one of the best-selling car models in the world, the hatchback has finally got an update since the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. Besides its new Aston Martin-esque grill design, the biggest highlight of the latest edition is a new range of engine choices, which enables a 17 percent fuel consumption reduction in the petrol version and a 19 percent improvement for the diesel one.
New Peugeot 308 SW
The small wagon has been given a complete redesign based on PSA’s “Efficient Modular Platform” (EMP2), which aims to optimize weight-savings and provide enhanced dynamic efficiency. Compared with the outgoing version, the latest model is 140kg lighter and available with Euro 6 petrol and diesel engines. The official CO2 emission level of its new BlueHDi diesel version is as low as 85g/km, setting a new benchmark in the segment.
