National standards for child safety seats come into effect
CHINA'S first national standards for child restraint systems in cars took effect on July 1, aiming to ensure the safety of kids when travelling.
Over 18,500 children under the age of 14 died in traffic accidents in China in each of the recent years, with its death rate more than double that of the Europe and the US, the Ministry of Public Security said, attributing the disparity to lack of use of child safety seats in China.
According to a survey by Autohome.com, the utilization rate of child safety seats in China is scant 30.6 percent, far below the figures of developed countries.
Under the new standards, domestic vehicles should be equipped with interfaces for the qualified child safety seats as well as safety locks. Standards on the production, sales and use of child safety seats have also been unveiled.
