School rebuilt in Daimler's CSR efforts
CHINA has become the third-biggest revenue-producer for Mercedes-Benz, after Germany and western Europe, and the United States, and the manufacturer Daimler is taking its corporate social responsibility seriously in China.
"It has always been a challenge and responsibility for us to integrate and promote the development of China's society. It is our long-term goal to produce clear and visible social benefits, and make more social feedback to society," Daimler said in its latest report on sustainable development.
Three years ago, Daimler started to rebuild a primary school in Shifang City, Sichuan Province, with the donations from the company's international and Chinese employees in the Northeast Asia region.
The city in northwestern Sichuan was seriously damaged when the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck the province in May 2008, destroying many schools as well as housing.
The company donated more than 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million) for earthquake reconstruction in Sichuan. Staff donated 5.15 million yuan to rebuild the school in Shifang.
Construction took a year and the school reopened on May 9, 2010. Facilities cover almost a hectare and can accommodate 170 students, the company said.
Daimler has developed a model of public services over many years around the world.
The company has organized several visits to the primary school in the past two years, and has set up music classrooms with instruments and classrooms equipped with computers.
During a recent visit in November, the delegation headed by Ulrich Walker, chairman and CEO of Daimler Northeast Asia, took German foods to the school to give pupils a taste of German tradition. They also took 18 laptops and 200 resource books there.
In addition, each student has received a "love bag," which contains a variety of presents, including stationery donated by staff of the Shanghai Daily newspaper.
In terms of social responsibility, the company emphasizes positive outcomes, not simply repeated donations, according to its CSR report.
Daimler's "MobileKids" is a training program about road safety for children aged from six to 10 years. They learn about present and future traffic conditions.
Globally, around 1.3 million children have benefitted from the program, which was introduced to China this year and is expected to provide systematic safety education for 70,000 students in 200 schools in the next three years.
Through teaching materials and training facilities, school-age children and their parents will receive safety education in an entertaining way.
"We want to advocate the idea of 'comprehensive security' by educating both the children and the parents about road safety and accident prevention," Daimler said in a statement.
The company has invested 99 million yuan in public welfare funds for Northeast Asia region. Arts and sports projects received the most funding in 2011, accounting for around 88 percent, followed by environment and energy, and education projects, according to Daimler's report on sustainable development.
