Shanghai Volkswagen sales jump nearly 10%
SHANGHAI Volkswagen Automotive Co Ltd, one of the leading car manufacturers in China, said domestic sales remained steady despite an industry-wide slowdown this year.
Shanghai Volkswagen, the flagship venture of Volkswagen AG and SAIC Motor Corp, reported October sales exceeded more than 100,000 vehicles, an increase of 9.7 percent year on year.
During the first 10 months of this year, more than 900,000 models have been delivered. The brisk sales enabled it to stay on track to break the 1 million unit milestone this year.
Sales for Volkswagen-brand models jumped 12.4 percent in October, totaling 82,075 units, according to the company's statement.
Mid- to high-class sedan NEW Passat played an important role in sales with more than 16,335 units delivered since it was launched in April. In September, Shanghai Volkswagen launched the 1.4TSI version of NEW Passat, which offers improved fuel efficiency and less emissions.
In November, the carmaker will introduce another NEW Passat sedan that has a more powerful V6 engine, aiming to cover the complete B-Class segment.
The VW Tiguan sport utility vehicle hit a sales record at 13,254 units in October, up 39 percent from the same period of last year. It remained among the top five selling SUVs in the country.
VW Lavida posted sales of more than 20,000 units in October. Total sales of the model amounted to nearly 200,000 units as it continued to build its leading position in the mid-class family car segment.
Sales of Polo models topped 12,000 units last month, Shanghai Volkswagen added.
The Skoda brand achieved sales of 18,102 units in October including 4,026 units of Superb upper-class sedans, which grew 20 percent from a year earlier.
More than 37,251 Superb sedans were delivered during January to October, up 17 percent.
That compared to accumulative sales of 35,917 units for the Fabia compact sedan and 98,599 Octavia sedans, which represented a year-on-year increase of 16 percent and 11 percent respectively.
Six Shanghai Volkswagen models have qualified for the latest subsidy scheme for fuel efficient vehicles released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. China further tightened standards for vehicles to qualify for the subsidy scheme.
Shanghai Volkswagen launched its "Powertrain Strategy" in 2007, introducing dozens of models with VW's world leading power package - the TSI engine and DSG transmission.
Five models that benefit from the latest subsidy scheme were equipped with the energy-saving technologies that helped to improve fuel consumption by 20 percent.
The NEW Passat and Skoda Superb were among the few mid- to high-class sedans that made the list.
Shanghai Volkswagen said it would continue to develop more eco-friendly models and contribute to sustainable growth in China's automotive industry.
The carmaker earlier said it would launch more products tailor-made for Chinese customers and step up efforts to further improve fuel efficiency.
