CES Asia aims to excite and awe with smart devices and robots

SMART driving and parking as well as using robots in a variety of applications and in different situations will all be on show during CES Asia to be held in Shanghai this week.

The three-day event is the first time CES, the world’s biggest consumer technology show, is being held in China whose technology market offers a great potential for smartphone replacement, ultra high-definition TV, smart home and car entertainment, according to CEA, the organizer of the show.

With connectivity, innovation and the Internet of Things as the common theme, CES Asia features 3D printing, robotics, wearables and 14 product categories.

Top business executives, including from Intel, IBM, Suning, Letv, Accenture and Audi, have been confirmed to speak at the various forums of CES Asia. Twitter, although not available in China, will hold seminars on robot and 3D printing. About 250 exhibitors are set to attend the show, which opens to media and professional visitors today and tomorrow, and to the public on Wednesday.

Spotlights of the show: Telematics

It’s a natural business decision for information technology giants to expand into the car business and vice versa.

Top automakers, including Ford and Mercedes-Benz, will attend the consumer technology event to showcase their latest innovation on telematics covering navigation, in-car entertainment and smart driving and parking.

China’s in-car entertainment market was worth US$2.2 billion in 2014 and will hit US$2.3 billion this year, CEA said.

Robotics

The world’s first robotic kitchen, created by Moley Robotics, will make its public debut during CES Asia.

A dexterous robot is integrated into a kitchen and is able to cook with the skill and flair of a master chef. The robot is supported by an iTunes library of recipes that can be downloaded and created.

Moley Robotics aims to produce a mass-market consumer version of the robot within two years, which will faithfully reproduce the movements of a human hand.

China has a “10-year” period to develop both industrial and humanoid products that can be used in manufacturing, health care, education and other sectors, said Siasun, a Shenyang-based company.

Smart devices

A helmet for virtual display, a wristband and watch for sport and monitoring health as well as a game system in various credit card-size devices will also be shown during the CES Asia event.

China Mobile, the world’s biggest mobile carrier, and wearable computing hardware makers, including Misfit and Tomtom, will showcase latest technologies on Internet of Things. The IOT features sensing and data analysis technologies, and China has picked it as a national strategic industry.

But Accenture says that work still needs to be conducted on the fledgling technology as consumers complain that the devices are complicated to use and unstable trying to connect to the Internet.
