XJTLU’s postgraduate programs are highly valued

IN Suzhou, a city that combines fast-paced development with classical Chinese history, you can find an emerging and pioneering international university — Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

Since its foundation in May 2006, XJTLU has taken a unique approach to international education that combines, encourages and develops the teachings of its two founding institutions — China’s Xi’an Jiaotong University, and the University of Liverpool in the UK.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, XJTLU has won wide recognition for its international environment, advanced educational concepts and high-quality talent cultivation.

In addition to its highly-praised and widely-recognized undergraduate programs, XJTLU is one of China’s largest Sino-foreign universities that offers a variety of full- and part-time postgraduate programs including business, science, engineering, mathematics, finance, architecture and urban planning. These courses lead to a masters degree awarded by the University of Liverpool and recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

All programmes are taught in English by international academic staff, and generous merit-based scholarships of up to 50 percent are available. Chinese applicants are not required to take the Ministry of Education postgraduate entrance examination, but XJTLU provides high-quality postgraduate education for all qualified applicants. XJTLU’s masters’ degree programs equip students with the most sought-after skills for today’s fast-changing world. For example, the MSc in Sustainable Construction prepares students to take a leadership role in finding innovative solutions to the challenges associated with sustainability in civil engineering practices, such as environmental pollution, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

“I like the teaching style here,” says Gong Puyue, a student in the MSc in Sustainable Construction program. “You can discuss things openly with professors. Apart from their professional knowledge, they also teach us how to study, and give us advice to further our careers.”

The program provides students with technologically advanced knowledge, problem-solving skills and a comprehensive understanding of the key aspects of sustainability in civil engineering construction, and is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators.

Full- and part-time options are available, and the program thoroughly prepares students to enter the field of sustainable construction. “In the future I will join a green building team to do building improvements for sustainability,” said Gong.

Also in the field of sustainability, the MSc Sustainable Energy Technology under the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering responds to a growing skill shortage of engineers with a high level of training in renewable energy, smart grids and sustainability.

“Studying for an MSc in Sustainable Energy at XJTLU has been a life changing experience for me,” says student Lou Hengyang. “I cannot imagine the world maintaining its reliance on traditional sources of energy, and we learned how to provide more innovative eco-friendly solutions to the global energy demand. This program will certainly be an asset for my future career.”

For those looking to improve their project management skills, the university offers courses through its exclusive business school, International Business School Suzhou. Tao Liping is studying part-time for a MSc in Project Management, and finds the practical applications of the program to be immediately evident.

“I wanted to develop my skills further, so I researched the master programs online,” says Tao. “On this course, I’m learning how to focus on details and monitor each project. We are learning specific techniques and skills that can be used in projects.”

The practice-based masters degree prepares the students for the strong project management job market in China and beyond. Students learn how to effectively plan, implement, control and monitor, and handle projects of various sizes and complexities.

In the fields of Urban Design and Architecture, XJTLU also offers programs to put students at the leading edge. The MSc in Urban Design, a cross-disciplinary masters’ degree offered by the departments of Architecture and Urban Planning and Design, trains students to engage in the complex issues of modern urban environments in the dynamic Chinese context.

“We examine the interplay between spatial design and social, economic, environmental and political issues evident in a range of urban settings,” says lecturer Dr Joon Sik Kim.

A two-year masters’ degree in Architectural Design is also available that offers an international perspective, while at the same time enabling students to address the demands of rapid modernization in China.

Whether full- or part-time study, XJTLU offers a range of programs to put students at the forefront of their chosen field.
