Zeiss casts its eye on prospect of opportunities in ‘testing zone’

THE new 16,400-square-meter building of Carl Zeiss (Shanghai) Co Ltd underscores the German lens manufacturer’s commitment to the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.

The company’s new China headquarters went into operation on September 15. Attending opening day ceremonies were Zeiss Group’s managers and representatives from the Free Trade Zone.

The new office integrates sales, after-sales services, training, logistics, personnel, finance, legal services and information technology for the company.

It also houses the Shanghai Innovation Center, the Zeiss Group’s first innovation and research center outside Germany.

Zeiss Chief Executive Officer Michael Kaschke said the group plans further investment in China, its biggest and fastest-growing market in the Asia-Pacific region.

Kaschke said the decision to locate Zeiss’s regional headquarters in Shanghai was an obvious choice. The company joins more than 400 multinationals with regional headquarters or research and development facilities in the Free Trade Zone.

“We looked around and decided the Shanghai pilot Free Trade Zone was the best,” said Maximilian Foerst, president of Zeiss China. “Here is the testing ground for various policies, and we are really impressed by the improved efficiency and lower costs of doing business in this zone.”

One notable example of improved efficiency is the speed by which Zeiss China can deliver payments to foreign suppliers. It used to take one week for overseas transfers. Now the money arrives in just one day.

Zeiss officials said the zone allows the company to respond more quickly to changing market demand.

The German company also said it is pleased to be able to display its products and equipment in its own office instead of having to store inventory in warehouses before paying Customs duties.

“We benefit a lot by choosing the Shanghai Free Trade Zone as the location of our China headquarters,” said Foerst. “We believe the special environment here will continue to bolster our performance and optimize the various integrated functions carried out in this new building.”

According to the company profile, Zeiss Group is now represented in the Chinese market by five business sectors: medical technology, microscopy, industrial metrology, vision care and consumer optics. Its revenue in China has grown by up to 30 percent a year in the past few years.
