6 infant formulas receive 'government recognized product' label

Six more domestic infant formulas have been labeled "government recognized product" with high production standards.
Both the government and milk powder makers want to restore confidence in products made in China after a series of food safety scandals rocked the industry in recent years.

Shanghai Bright Dairy & Food Co's Good Infant, along with five other products made by infant formula companies like Nestle, Shanghai Howell and Meilu Dairy Co received the new label, the China Dairy Industry Association said in a statement today.

Last year, the association gave the label to 12 infant formulas, including products made by Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group and Mengniu Dairy Co Ltd.

China had 128 infant formula manufacturers by the end of last year with total production capacity rising 15 percent to 700,000 tons. However, under a government blueprint, outdated or inefficient infant formula makers will be eliminated within a few years.

Last week, the State Food and Drug Administration renewed the production licenses of 82 of the 128 domestic baby formula producers. The others either failed quality standards or asked to delay the license application.

Infant formula producers are also required to register product formulas, packages and labels with provincial food and drug administrations as the country steps up scrutiny of food safety.
