Ahoy! China sails toward cruise goal
CHINA’S biggest shipbuilder will build the country’s first world-class luxury cruise liner for Carnival Corp, the world’s largest cruise operator, in a move to boost domestic cruise tourism.
Carnival and China State Shipbuilding Corp yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding to form a joint venture that would also involve Italian shipyard Fincantieri SpA.
Carnival will provide ship design and quality-control expertise for CSSC and Fincantieri to help build the first made-in-China world-class luxury cruise vessel.
This will help China’s goal to become the world’s leading cruise market, Carnival said in a statement.
China’s cruise market has seen the number of passengers grow from several thousand in 2005 to 570,000 last year, figures from the China Communications and Transportation Association showed.
The domestic market is set to become one of the world’s largest by 2020 when handling 4.5 million travelers annually, according to the association.
