Another NZ milk exporter banned over tainted product

China's quality watchdog has suspended the import of some products from Westland Milk Products in New Zealand after an excessive amount of nitrate was detected in its milk powder.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said Heilongjiang Wondersun Dairy Co discovered a “higher-than-expected” level of nitrate in the lactoferrin it imported from Westland, according to a statement on its website today.

The administration has ordered customs authorities to seal products Wondersun imported from Westland and halt all lactoferrin imports from Westland.

It also asked other New Zealand dairy exporters to provide their nitrate testing reports.

Westland exported 390 kilograms of lactoferrin to China and none of it has entered the retail chain.

New Zealand's Ministry of Primary Industries has revoked export certificates for four batches of lactoferrin made by Westland.

"Food safety risk to Chinese consumers is negligible because the quantities of lactoferrin used in consumer products was very small, meaning the nitrate levels in those products would easily be within acceptable levels," MPI said in a statement on its website today.
