Bank card payment surges 38% during holiday
SPENDING by Chinese bank card holders surged in the three-day New Year's Day holiday as people spent more on travel and shopping, the latest industry figures showed today.
Cross-bank transaction volume jumped 38 percent from a year ago, said China UnionPay, the country's sole bank card transaction firm.
Overseas spending also grew 23 percent from the same period of last year, UnionPay said, without releasing the amount of total bank card transactions.
Travel-related expenditure also boomed as people took excursions during the holiday. Spending at passenger transportation outlets was 2.6 times more than that of a year ago and payment at gas stations rose 53 percent.
Online payment for train tickets also increased 38 percent as more people purchase tickets through websites.
